This presentation will cover concepts of what is meant by functional oral health. Areas that will be addressed will be prenatal development, and areas that predispose an individual to aberrant developmental patterns as they grow, oral restrictions and their immediate impact as well as long term impacts on health and development. He obtained his specialty in pediatric dentistry in New Orleans and has a special interest in persons with special needs, behaviour, prevention, education and wellness. He teaches at both the University of Toronto and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He has been president of the International Association of Disability and Oral Health and the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disability. Currently he sits on ICC - International Clinical Council of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans. He is also on the editorial board for the British Society for Disability and Oral Health Journal. His current interest is in transitioning patients with special needs from a pediatric practice to a GP practice and the impact of tethered tissue on long term growth and development.

Recently interest in obstructive sleep disorders has led to much speculation within the dental profession making it difficult to separate fact from fiction. This presentation will be a succinct review of published literature and recent clinical trial data, providing a clear picture of the evidence base on the topic. The relationship between sleep disordered breathing and craniofacial growth and development, as well as the current evidence of managing pediatric sleep disorders with dentofacial orthopedics will be directly addressed.

Dr. Benjamin Pliska is an Associate Professor of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry and maintains private practices in Vancouver as a certified specialist in Orthodontics. Dr. Pliska is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario School of Dentistry, and obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics and Master’s Degree in Dentistry from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Pliska lectures both locally and internationally on his research interests, which include airway imaging and pediatric sleep medicine.

Atout joined the periodontal department at the University of Manitoba as an assistant professor in September 2010 after her one-year experience as a clinic instructor in the department of Periodontology at Harvard University. She received her Bachelor's degree in Dental Surgery (BDS) from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2000, and shortly after that moved to California where she obtained her California dental license and practiced in general dentistry for a few years. In 2006, Dr. Atout joined the University of Alabama in Birmingham where she continued her training and earned a Master in Science (MS) and her Certificate in Periodontology. Dr. Kiarash is the Director of the Department of Periodontics, Faculty of Dentistry at McGill University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and an active member of the International Team of Implantology (ITI). Dr. Kiarash is the Chairman for the Predoctoral Directors Organization of the American Academy of Periodontology, as well as a voting member on the Education Committee for the AAP. He is the President-Elect of the Canadian Academy of Periodontology and the co-organizer for the Annual Scientific Session as well as the Long-Term Strategic Planning Committee for the CAP. The presentation will focus on pre-operative assessment of a surgical patient aimed at identifying risk factors that may result in potential complications. Some of the topics that will be included are: considerations regarding medically compromised patients, medications such as blood thinners and bisphosphonates (and other related medications), and a history of radiation exposure. Real patient cases will be used to illustrate the examples. The objective of the presentation is to increase awareness of risk factors associated with surgical patients and to provide guidelines to decrease the occurrence of complications. The goal is that every attendee would walk away from the discussion with a number of clinical pearls that can be applied to daily practice. The discussion would be interactive and dynamic; questions would be encouraged throughout.

Grace Bradley obtained her DDS degree at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 1979, after which she trained in the Oral Pathology residency program from 1980 to 1983. She received her MSc. degree in 1984 and continued research training as a fellow of the Medical Research Council of Canada at the Ontario Cancer Institute / Princess Margaret Hospital from 1983 – 1987. She obtained her fellowship in Oral Pathology at the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in 1986 and was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto in 1987 and cross-appointed as staff dentist (Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine) at the Department of Dentistry, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. Currently she holds the appointment of Professor and Director of the graduate program in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine at U. of Toronto and Director of the Oral Pathology laboratory. She has participated in the Oral Pathology Diagnostic Service at the Faculty of Dentistry since 1987. Her academic interests are the use of virtual microscopy in undergraduate and graduate teaching of Oral Pathology, and the pathology of oral squamous carcinoma and precursor lesions.

Dr. Marco Magalhaes is a clinician-scientist, director of the Cancer Invasion and Metastasis Laboratory (CIMlab) at the Faculty of Dentistry, staff oral pathologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and assistant professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, cross-appointed to Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Magalhaes received his PhD in cell biology at the University of Toronto in 2009 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Cancer Centre before returning to the University of Toronto to complete his residency in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine. Dr. Magalhaes has several research projects in the area of oral cancer and oral pathology and is a member of the Network for Canadian Oral Health and Research (NCOHR) oral cancer group. His main area of interest is the progression of oral lesions to oral cancer and understanding how the oral microenvironment can influence malignant transformation. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
