This lecture will highlight the changing physiology of the elderly and how it will impact your dental care. Discuss the aging pulmonary, cardiac, hepatic and neurologic systems, as well as the plethora of prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements consumed by seniors, including their oral effect on the oral cavity.

Biography:

Dr. Michael Wiseman, D.D.S., graduated from McGill University, Faculty of Dentistry in 1985. He then completed a one-year multidisciplinary residency at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Wiseman opened his practice. Dr. Wiseman’s experiences treating special needs patients led him to further his knowledge by obtaining Fellowship status by exam in the Special Care Dentistry Association. He is also a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in Special Needs Dentistry. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Wiseman is on staff at several Montreal area hospitals including Mount Sinai, St. Mary’s and the Hôpital Ste Anne (former Veteran’s Hospital).

Teaching is one of Dr. Wiseman’s passions. He taught human biology at Concordia University for many years. Later, he joined the teaching staff of the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill where he has imparted his love of dentistry to his students for over 25 years, and where he continues to teach today. Dr. Wiseman also holds a cross-appointment with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill. Dr. Wiseman founded the Outreach Program of the McGill Faculty of Dentistry which provides free dental services to the disadvantaged of Montreal. Setting up mobile dental units in church basements, at Sun Youth, and Dans la Rue, Dr. Wiseman and his volunteers treated individuals who would otherwise not be able to afford dental care. Over the years, Dr. Wiseman has served on various Faculty committees. In 2012, he received the Alumnus of the Year Award in recognition of the values of empathy and caring that he exemplifies, as well as his many contributions to the McGill Faculty of Dentistry.

Dr. Wiseman is also called upon to share his knowledge and expertise with other dental professionals. He has written chapters in several dental textbooks, published articles, and has also been invited to speak at dental conferences across Canada and the U.S.A. Dr. Wiseman is active in organized dentistry, serving on committees of the Canadian Dental Association, Alpha Omega International Dental Association, and Special Care Dentistry.

In his free time, Dr. Wiseman enjoys spending time with his family and friends, as well as his devoted miniature poodle, Leia.
