Course Outline
Our discussion on sleep encompasses a comprehensive view across the lifespan, delving into the intricacies of normal sleep patterns and transitions, before honing in on the critical issue of sleep apnea. We will explore its prevalence, impact on health, potential prognostic implications, and various management strategies. Through patient trajectories and detailed case scenarios, we will illustrate the journey from the onset and diagnosis of sleep apnea to its effective treatment.

Additionally, we will shine a light on other prevalent chronic sleep disorders, with a particular focus on chronic insomnia. Of significant interest is its intertwining relationship with sleep apnea, now recognized as COMISA (coexisting obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia). By dissecting these disorders and their overlapping features, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of their complexities and potential treatment approaches.

Learning Objectives
  • To understand the current clinical science of sleep and its impact on health.

  • To develop a strategy for risk assessment for sleep apnea, and the importance of intervention starting with discussion and diagnosis.

  • To understand the outcomes in treatment of sleep apnea and therapeutic options.
  • To survey the other common sleep disorders.
  • To gain a better understanding of insomnia, and its interaction with sleep apnea, commonly called COMISA (co-morbid insomnia with sleep apnea). Treatment options will be discussed.
