Objectives:

1. Oral Pathology

  • Patient assessment:
    • History taking
    • Visual inspection
    • Extra oral examination
    • Intraoral examination
    • Descriptive terminology 
  • Documentation
  • Common pathologies:
    • Benign lumps and bumps
    • Infections
    • Autoimmune conditions
    • Malignancies: SCC, lip SCC, lymphomas of H&N
    • Iatrogenic conditions
  • Diagnostic tips to distinguish between benign and malignant
  • Case Review


2. Orofacial Pain and TMD

  • Who should manage these patients
  • Patient assessment
    • History taking: pain history, etc.
    • Visual inspection
    • Palpation and measurements of the TMJ and associated musculature.
  • Common Conditions:
  • Myofascial Pain:
    • Review of available therapies, starting with conservative options (e.g., physical therapy, behavioural modifications), progressing to injections, topical ointments, oral appliances (e.g., nightguards), and surgical interventions.
  • Orofacial/atypical pain
  • Joint disease: OA, RA, JRA, AnkSPON
  • Mimickers of orofacial pain:
    • Giant cell arteritis (GCA)
    • Referred ear pain
    • Tumors or neoplasms affecting the head and neck region
    • Neuropathic pain conditions (e.g., trigeminal neuralgia, burning mouth syndrome).
  • Role of imaging (e.g., MRI, CT, radiographs) in diagnosing TMD and orofacial pain.
  • Multidisciplinary approach to managing complex orofacial pain cases.
  • Case Review


Biography:
Dr. Mohamad-Hasan Kadhim is a board-certified specialist in Oral Medicine & Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, as well as a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Currently, he holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Diagnostic & Surgical Sciences at the University of Manitoba, where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as residents.

Dr. Kadhim's educational journey began with a Bachelor's degree in science from the University of Manitoba. Following this, he served four years in the Canadian Forces in Winnipeg and Shilo. He obtained a dental degree from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, in 2019. Driven by a passion for dentistry, medicine and pathology, he completed a four-year hospital residency program in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital.
