Objectives:

  1. History, background and basic concepts of oral-systemic science/medicine

    • Chronic systemic inflammation and an array of related diseases/conditions

    • Importance of oral biofilm and biofilm maintenance

    • Potential models of future dental practice and comprehensive interprofessional patient management

Biography:
Dr. Iacopino completed the prestigious National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research Dentist/Scientist Training Program in 1991 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. From 1991 to 1999, he was a faculty member at the Baylor College of Dentistry. In 1999, he moved on to the position of Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and Director of the Wisconsin Geriatric Education Center at the Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee. In 2007, he became the Dean of the Niznick College of Dentistry within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg (the first such Interprofessional Health Sciences Faculty in Canada). Here he established the International Centre for Oral-Systemic Health (ICOSH) in January of 2008.

He is currently Dean/Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba, serving as ICOSH executive director. Dr. Iacopino has a national/international reputation in dental research and dental education, having presented numerous keynote lectures/symposia at meetings for the National Institutes of Health, American Association of Dental Research, American Dental Association, and the American Dental Education Association. He has served as a peer reviewer for over 100 journals and federal/industry granting agencies. He served as PI or Co-I on 28 research and/or training grants totaling $20,000,000, published 175 peer-reviewed manuscripts/book chapters and has presented 200 abstracts/invited lectures internationally. He has been recognized as a valued consultant and key opinion leader within government, education, healthcare systems, and the dental industry for many years, emphasizing oral-systemic health and the integration of oral health into comprehensive healthcare (coining the phrase “one patient, one care plan, one record”). He also served as the Associate Editor for Grand Rounds in Oral-Systemic Medicine, the first interprofessional publication dedicated to that mission.
