Course Outline:

  • The history and science behind PBMT.
  • Dosage calculations and choosing an appropriate device.
  • Clinical Procedures: Reducing pain after surgery, treatment of soft tissue lesions, Analgesia allowing some procedures to be completed without the use of needles, nerve regeneration treating xerostomia, Preventing and managing Mucositis in cancer and stem cell patients.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of facial pain/TMD using PBMT as a tool of that treatment.
    • I want attendees to understand what procedures to start with and those to wait until they are more experienced.
  • Using PDT in Periodontal, Restorative and Endodontic procedures.


Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course the clinician will be able to:

  1. To understand the science behind Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT).
  2. To understand the difference between Lasers and Light Emitting Diodes in PBMT and where each fit into treatment protocols.
  3. To learn how PBMT can be applied to procedures within our offices and what settings should be used to achieve ideal results.
  4. Participants will have the knowledge and confidence to immediately apply these principles.
  5. Attendees will learn about Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in dentistry and how this can be applied.

Biography:
Dr. Gerry Ross, 1971 Graduate University of Toronto DDS Degree. Carried out a dental Practice in Tottenham Ontario since 1971- General Dental practice with a special interest in Facial pain. Have been using Surgical lasers since 1992 and Low-Level Lasers (PBM) since 1993. Member of Academy of Laser Dentistry and hold Standard and Advanced Proficiency. 2016 received Leon Goldman award as most outstanding laser clinician. Member NAALT (North American Society of Photobiomodulation) and was President 2011-2012. Have given approximately 300 courses and lectures on lasers and PBM on 5 continents. Have published 10 articles on lasers and PBM and have written chapters for two textbooks. Have created 2 training videos on PBM for MedX Health corporation. Am a member of Editorial Board for Photobiomodulation and Photomedicine and Laser Surgery. Do peer review for 4 Peer Reviewed Laser Journals.



SOFT TISSUE LASER DENTISTRY: REAL APPLICATIONS AND CONSTRAINTS

Course Outline:

For more then 40 years since its invention (1966), the laser has found a wide range of applications in medicine. It took more than 25 years to see the first dental laser (with very limited use) in our office. But since then, various types of lasers for dental treatments (Nd YAG, CO², Diode, ErCr:YSGG and ErYAG ) have been developed and applied clinically. More and more dentists show interest in the possibilities laser may open to treat soft tissues as well as hard tissues. This interest primarily is based on the research done in the past years by the dental community in different universities worldwide (Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, U.S.A) where the efficiency of such device on the oral tissue has been proven. As they continue to gain acceptance and recognition within the dental community, lasers are becoming an instrumental part of the everyday practice.

Parallel to the common scalpel surgery, laser systems allow today many clinical applications in oral surgical procedures. According to the tissue quality (inflamed, hyperplastic, filled with fluid or blood) and the laser parameters, it is now possible to accomplish a complication free surgical procedure without any scar tissue formation. Effective cutting, sufficient coagulation, shortened operating time and good to excellent hemostasis are the aim of laser therapy. The laser operations are rapid and bloodless and have excellent cosmetic and functional results in the oral cavity.

  2. Recognize the contribution of lasers in various treatments of oral tissues.
  3. Discover the benefits and possibilities of oral laser treatment.

Biography:

Dr. André Chartrand received BSc in the department of Physical Education from Université de Montréal in 1980, a teaching certificate from Ministère de l’enseignement du Québec in 1980 and his DMD from Université de Montréal in 1984.

Dr. Chartrand has been in private practice since 1984. He has been a committee member of the Journées Dentaires Internationales du Québec (JDIQ) since 2009, president of JDIQ since 2019, and a guest lecturer at Université de Montréal on laser technology in dentistry. Dr. Charland also lectures internationally on laser technology and has published numerous articles and a DVD on laser treatment.
